Transformer & Plant Transport Brisbane
Transformers and large substation plant are the heaviest single-item loads that move on Brisbane's roads. A distribution transformer can weigh 40–80 tonnes; a large power transformer can exceed 100 tonnes and travel as a wide, over-dimensional load on a multi-axle platform float with a jeep dolly and steerable rear. These moves are OSOM by definition — NHVR access permits, route surveys, bridge rating checks and a multi-pilot plan are standard, not optional.
What we move
Distribution and power transformers, switchgear modules, substation buildings, reactor vessels and large electrical plant. We move from the Port of Brisbane (imported transformers) and from manufacturers to substations across SEQ and beyond.
The platform float setup
Large transformers move on a platform float with a jeep dolly at the front and a steerable rear axle group, often running 6+ axles to spread 80–100+ tonnes within bridge and pavement ratings. The combination is long, heavy and wide — swept path and bridge ratings drive the route.
Permits, escorts and lead time
Transformer moves need NHVR access permits, a detailed route survey, bridge and pavement rating checks, and a multi-pilot plan — sometimes a police escort for the largest units. Lead time is critical: permits and bridge assessments can take days to weeks, so we book early and coordinate with the port, the substation and the network owner.
SEQ corridor
Transformer work concentrates on the Port of Brisbane (discharge from vessel to float), then outbound via the Gateway Motorway and Logan Motorway to substations across SEQ and west via Toowoomba. We avoid peak-hour and event windows and confirm corridor access with port and gate scheduling.
