Oversize Transport Brisbane

Compliance-led oversize transport for complex SEQ moves over 2.5m wide — Class 1 permits, route surveys, curfews and pilot escorts, planned per load.

Oversize transport is the movement of any load that exceeds standard dimension limits — and in Brisbane and SEQ that threshold starts at 2.5 metres wide. Once a load crosses 2.5m width, 4.3m height, or significant length and overhang, it becomes a Class 1 restricted access vehicle move under the Heavy Vehicle National Law: it needs an NHVR access permit, a route survey, curfew management and a sized pilot escort plan before the wheels turn. We plan oversize transport as a compliance-led, engineered move — not a booking. The cargo ranges from earthmoving plant and transportable buildings to precast panels, structural steel, transformers, mining equipment and wide fabricated loads, and the job is matching the trailer, surveying the route, lodging the permit and sizing the escort so the move actually travels when you need it.

What makes a load oversize in Brisbane

Under the Heavy Vehicle National Law a load is oversize when it exceeds general access dimension limits — 2.5m width, 4.3m height, 12.5m rigid length or 19m combination length. Past those thresholds the combination becomes a Class 1 restricted access vehicle and needs an NHVR access permit to travel, and the permit sets the conditions: when, where and with what escort. In Brisbane and SEQ that covers earthmoving plant, transportable buildings, precast panels, structural steel, transformers, mining equipment and wide fabricated loads. The challenge isn't finding a truck — it's matching the trailer, surveying the route and getting the Class 1 permit right before the wheels turn.

Over-dimensional vs over-mass — and why it matters

Oversize splits into two planning problems. Over-dimensional is about geometry — width, height and length — and it drives route clearance checks, swept-path analysis and escort tiers. Over-mass is about weight, and it drives axle limits, bridge and pavement rating checks and the float combination. A long precast beam can be over-dimensional but not heavy; a compact transformer can be heavy but not over-dimensional. OSOM loads are both. We plan each side separately so the trailer, the route and the permit all line up — see our heavy haulage and OSOM pages for the over-mass end of the spectrum.

Matching the trailer to the load

Oversize isn't one trailer — it's a family. Low loaders carry most earthmoving plant and over-height items on a deck as low as 600–800mm; extendable drop decks handle long structural steel and precast by stretching the deck to the load; platform floats with dollies and steerable rears carry the heaviest transformers and mining modules. We pick the trailer against your load's weight, width, length and height, not a default. Get the trailer wrong and the move either can't travel legally or overloads the axles before it leaves the yard. Our fleet pages break down each trailer family.

Class 1 permits, pilots and route surveys

Almost every oversize move needs an NHVR access permit for the Class 1 combination; many need a route survey and a pilot escort plan. We handle the permit, the pilot booking and the route survey — including swept-path checks at SEQ roundabouts and interchanges, overhead clearance checks against loaded height, and bridge and pavement rating checks for heavy loads. Permit conditions usually restrict travel to daylight hours, ban school-zone periods and may limit the route to off-peak corridor windows. Permit lead time often governs when a move can travel, so we book early and tell you the realistic timeline. Our permits and compliance page has the detail.

Curfews and the SEQ corridor

Brisbane's oversize corridor runs from the Port of Brisbane through the Acacia Ridge–Richlands heavy vehicle belt, west via the Ipswich Motorway to Ipswich and Toowoomba, and south via the Gateway and Logan Motorways to Yatala and the Gold Coast. The interchanges are the swept-path pinch points — the Gateway/Logan merge and the Ipswich Motorway roundabouts; bridge clearances rule out over-height loads on certain inner-city viaducts; and the 6:30–9:00am and 3:30–6:30pm peaks plus school-zone hours limit when over-dimensional loads can travel. We plan around the curfews and the corridor, not against them.

Lead time — when to book

A straightforward oversize access permit may clear in a few days; an OSOM permit with bridge rating reviews can take one to two weeks or more. Lead time, not trailer availability, is usually what gates a move. We lodge permits the moment a job is confirmed and tell you the realistic timeline up front — so you're not waiting on a permit the day before the move.

What we move

Excavators and earthmoving plant, cranes, precast concrete, portable and modular buildings, transformers and substation plant, structural steel, mining equipment, agricultural machinery and wide loads of every kind. Each has its own job page with the trailer, permit and escort considerations. If it's over-dimensional and it's moving in Brisbane or SEQ, we plan it — and if it's outside SEQ, we'll tell you rather than overpromise.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an oversize load in Brisbane?

Any load exceeding standard dimension limits — width over 2.5m, height over 4.3m, or significant length or overhang. Once your load crosses those thresholds it becomes a Class 1 restricted access vehicle move and needs an NHVR access permit to travel, with the permit setting the escort and timing conditions.

Do you handle the NHVR permit and pilot escort?

Yes. We classify the load, survey the route, lodge the NHVR access permit and size the pilot escort plan as one job. You give us the load and the route; we handle the compliance, the curfew windows and the escort tier.

How much notice do you need for an oversize move?

A straightforward oversize permit may clear in a few days; an OSOM move with bridge rating checks can take one to two weeks or more. We tell you the realistic lead time when you request a quote and lodge permits early.

Which trailer does my oversize load need?

It depends on the load — low loaders for plant and over-height items, extendable drop decks for long loads, platform floats for heavy and wide cargo. We match the trailer to your load's weight, width, length and height, not a default.

Do oversize moves have curfews in Brisbane?

Often yes. Permit conditions usually restrict travel to daylight hours, ban school-zone periods, and may limit the route to off-peak corridor windows outside the 6:30–9:00am and 3:30–6:30pm peaks. We plan around the curfews and the SEQ corridor.

What areas do you cover?

Brisbane and South East Queensland only — the Port of Brisbane, Acacia Ridge, Ipswich, Logan, Yatala, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Caboolture and the Redlands. If your move is outside SEQ we'll tell you.

How do I get a quote?
