Drop Deck / Extendable

Long loads, structural steel and modular cargo

Extendable drop decks stretch to carry long structural members, bridge beams and modular building sections that exceed a fixed trailer's deck length.

Structural steel, bridge beams, long pipes, modular sections

When length is the problem

Some loads are not heavy — they are long. Structural steel beams, precast girders, long pipe strings and modular building frames routinely exceed 12 metres. An extendable drop deck lets us match the deck length to the load, keeping overhang within escort thresholds and avoiding a second trailer where one will do.

How the extension works

The deck telescopes hydraulically and locks at the required length. Loading height sits lower than a flat-top, which helps with tall cargo and with crane lifts onto the deck. For very long items we pair the extendable with a jeep dolly at the front to share the pin load and keep the prime mover within rating.

Drop deck vs flat-top

A drop deck (step-frame) sits lower than a flat-top trailer, which matters in two ways on a long load: it keeps the overall loaded height down so the combination clears SEQ's viaducts and overpasses, and it reduces the lift height for a crane loading steel or precast onto the deck. For long items that are also tall — deep girders, modular building frames — a drop deck is usually the safer choice than a flat-top.

Loading, lift and tie-down

Long members are loaded by crane or winched up a low-angle ramp, then chained at multiple points along the deck to control bounce and shift. On an extendable we set the deck length so the load bears across the right number of bolsters, not just the ends — that keeps the load stable and the overhang within escort thresholds. We plan the lift sequence with the fabricator or yard so the right members arrive in the right order.

Permit planning for long loads

Rear overhang beyond 3.7m typically triggers a pilot and a permit; beyond 8.5m the load is treated as a long vehicle with additional escort and route-survey requirements. We map turning paths at roundabouts and tight SEQ intersections — the Logan Motorway and Ipswich Motorway interchanges are common pinch points — before confirming a route.

SEQ corridors for long loads

Long loads route differently to wide ones — the pinch points are turning paths, not clearances. We map swept path at the Logan Motorway and Ipswich Motorway interchanges, the roundabouts through Acacia Ridge and Richlands, and the tight entries to inner-city civil sites. Where a long combination can't make a turn we revise the route or schedule the move outside peak so the driver can use the full carriageway.

When one deck isn't enough

Very long members — bridge girders, long pipe strings — can exceed even an extended deck. In that case we add a jeep dolly at the front or run a second trailer as a jinker at the rear, supporting the overhang and keeping the combination within length and escort limits. We'll tell you straight up if your load needs more than one deck.

Best-fit cargo

Extendable drop decks suit structural steel transport, precast concrete transport, long pipe and tank sections, and modular building transport where the load is long rather than extremely heavy. For pure mass we'd move you to a low loader or platform float instead.

Frequently asked questions

What loads suit an extendable drop deck?

Long loads that aren't extremely heavy — structural steel beams, precast girders, long pipe strings, modular building frames and bridge beams. For pure mass we'd move you to a low loader or platform float.

How long can the deck extend?

Decks extend from around 12 metres to 20 metres and beyond depending on the unit and load. We match the deck length to keep overhang within escort thresholds and avoid a second trailer where one will do.

Do long loads need a pilot?

Rear overhang beyond 3.7m typically triggers a permit and a pilot; beyond 8.5m the load is treated as a long vehicle with extra escort and route-survey requirements. We map turning paths at SEQ roundabouts and interchanges before confirming a route.

Why a drop deck and not a flat-top?

The lower deck helps with tall cargo, keeps overall height down for bridge clearances, and makes crane lifts onto the deck easier. It's the right choice when length and height both matter.

How do I get a quote?

Send the member dimensions and weight, the fabricator-to-site route and the lift sequence. We'll match the deck length, plan the permit and give you a free quote. Call 0489 953 607 or use the quote form.

Specifications are indicative only and not a guarantee of any particular unit's capacity. Final trailer selection is assessed per load.

Plan your move on a drop deck / extendable

Tell us the load, the dimensions and the pickup-to-delivery route. We'll confirm whether a drop deck / extendable is the right trailer, plan the permit and pilot, and give you a free quote.
