Over-Dimensional Transport Brisbane

Over-dimensional transport is the geometry-driven side of oversize — any load that exceeds standard heavy vehicle dimension limits (width over 2.5m, height over 4.3m, length over 12.5m rigid or 19m combination, or significant rear overhang). What makes a load over-dimensional in Brisbane

A load is over-dimensional when it exceeds general access dimension limits — 2.5m width, 4.3m height, 12.5m rigid length or 19m combination length, or rear overhang beyond about 3.7m. Once any of those is breached the combination becomes a Class 1 restricted access vehicle and needs an NHVR access permit, and the permit conditions are driven by the load's geometry: which lanes, which corridors, what escort, what time of day. In SEQ the classic over-dimensional loads are long precast beams, wide transportable buildings, over-height plant and wide fabricated items.

Over-dimensional vs over-mass — and why it matters

Over-dimensional is about size — width, height and length. Over-mass is about weight. A long precast beam can be over-dimensional but relatively light; a compact transformer can be heavy but within dimensions. OSOM loads are both. The planning differs: over-dimensional drives clearance and swept-path checks; over-mass drives axle and bridge rating checks. Route surveys and swept path

Over-dimensional moves get a route survey: overhead clearance checks against loaded height (sign gantries, bridges, overpasses, light-rail catenary on the Ipswich Motorway), swept-path analysis at roundabouts and tight intersections, and width checks against lane and shoulder clearance. In SEQ the Gateway and Logan Motorway interchanges and the inner-city viaducts are the classic pinch points. Trailer matching for size

Over-height loads suit a low loader's low deck (600–800mm) to clear bridges; long loads suit an extendable drop deck to control overhang; wide loads may need a platform float for the deck width. We pick the trailer against the dimension that's the problem — height, length or width — not a default. Get the trailer wrong and the load either can't clear a bridge or hangs out the back past legal overhang.

Class 1 permits and escort tiers

Width over 2.5m triggers a Class 1 NHVR access permit; 3.0–3.5m usually needs one pilot; 3.5–4.5m one or two pilots; beyond 4.5m a police escort and traffic management. Height and length can trigger a permit without a pilot, but a route survey is still needed. We size the escort to the dimension and the route — a wide load on a narrow rural road needs more cover than the same width on a motorway corridor.

Curfews and travel windows

Permit conditions usually restrict over-dimensional travel to daylight hours, ban school-zone periods, and may limit the route to off-peak corridor windows outside the 6:30–9:00am and 3:30–6:30pm peaks. Some corridors allow off-peak daytime windows; the largest moves may run at night under traffic management. We plan the travel window to the permit, not the other way around.

SEQ corridor and pinch points

Over-dimensional moves through Brisbane favour the Gateway Motorway and Logan Motorway corridors, but the interchanges are the swept-path pinch points; the inner-city viaducts rule out over-height loads and force a detour via higher-clearance corridors; the Ipswich Motorway roundabouts gate outbound moves west. We avoid peak-hour, school zones and event windows, and plan around the Port of Brisbane and CBD restrictions where they apply.
